WLCG/GEANT/NRENs
Inadequate WAN; or competition with other sciences
Wide Area Networking bandwidth does not provide the bandwidth we need to support the future (or evolved current) computing models. We may have to share bandwidth with other Exabyte-scale sciences.
Lack of sufficient bandwidth to support data delivery models.
We must work with the networking community to exploit technology innovations to permit traffic shaping or prioritising. The network community via the LHCOPN/LHCOne group is starting to look into this. WLCG sites should engage in the R&D in order to ensure that proposed solutions can be implemented at sites.
Until now LHC has been given as much network capacity as it has needed in almost all regions. Now we enter an era where there are starting to be science communites with similar data scales as LHC who will compete in many places for the bandwdith provisioned by NREN's or GEANT. We must be prepared to collaborate on finding an acceptable solution that does not increase operational complexity too much, but that allows NREN's to manage traffic priorities.
